In infant hair, children have dandruff. I call it hair children dandruff, but the real name for the type of hair dandruff children have is called cradle cap. Adults are continuously making new skin cells at about the same rate at which we lose old dry skin cells. In adults that have a healthy scalp, when the old skin falls off we usually don't even notice the process. With infants, the skin cells may grow faster on their scalp than they can fall off. This usually will leave a layer of somewhat crusty, extra skin. We call this cradle cap and it is a crusting and scaling rash found in the hair of children and it looks like dandruff.
Cradle cap usually starts at 3 months of age. This condition usually will disappear by the time the child is 1 year of age. Cradle cap, hair children dandruff can be treated easiest by rubbing a small amount of olive oil or baby oil onto the scalp of your baby's head. After waiting several minutes the oil will loosen to soften and loosen the scales. Then you can easily brush them away with a terry-cloth washcloth.
